2015 – January 22

Grade one teacher presentation:

A Glimpse into Grade One Writing, a Time of Tremendous Growth

Teachers: Rebecca Toombs, Maegan Heller & Lise Hawkins

  • Teachers date the kids’ writing to be able to see the gains they are making
  • Start off slowly, over time make them more accountable – spelling, punctuation, spacing between words
  • Confidence grows as they realize they can communicate their experiences and stories with text
  • Engaging them in different ways:

o   Kids are read to at least two times a day

o   Kids have personal word walls – they record high-frequency words; words all over the room, word games (Word Hunt), etc., teaching them to use what they know

o   Specific exercises like Writer’s Workshop, descriptive feedback, sharing stories with the class

o   Empowering to learn to write

o   Using technology to support, such as iPad learning apps
