MINUTES:

  1. Grade Two staff presenting use of iPads in the school – Kim Johanssen & Lynnette Archer
  • Applications being used at all school levels now
  • Some classes have Apple TV, so they can send their work wirelessly
  • Simple example apps:

o   ChatterKids (free app) – good way to get at point of view in literacy

o   Take a photo, draw a line for a speech bubble, then record a voice. Great way to play around with point of view

o   Showed a Valentine’s Day example to show their opinion; they each chose an object and made it their valentine … some of the shyest kids were doing funny accents and made it

  • In classroom, can use it in literacy, take a pic of something in a book and have the character or the author or someone else say something about the book
  • “Explain Everything”– kids choose pictures to create a slideshow and can embellish pictures.

o   Can start and stop with their video recording.

  • Archer: in a social studies project, used a website called CultureGrams (free app)– great site – kids took info from different areas, wrote down info … goal was to compare culture of country they chose and compare it to where they live
  • Ms. Vale did one with gr 5/6 kids using Erazma

o   Create a vid and you have a picture. When you use the iPad to hover over the picture, the iPad recognizes it and comes to life – image activates the video; she used it for kids to talk about a book they’d read.

  • Skitch– a photo app – you can add text to photos
  • Book Creator– kids copy and paste pictures into book and then write the text
  • Ms. Leung is working with a few iPads doing some Learning Through the Arts programs doing some digital art
  • Have about 45 iPads; have 10 per floor – classes share
  • Majority of iPads paid for by Parent Council programs like Hoot & Howl – it’s a luxury; we’re fortunate
  • Ms. Archer likes to find out about new apps, checks out privacy issues around them, too
  • Apps & iPads help kids communicate in different ways – support different units and subjects; some very good math apps, too.
  • Most apps Pape uses are free; if you purchase it, you have to have one for every iPad

  1.         Running Club presentation – Laurea Navratil & parent/volunteers Elizabeth Gladney & Karen Malone
  • This is the biggest club in the school
  • For 2015, Laurea will lead an inclusive, fun, supportive and safe program (“Recreational”), plus a “Development” program; programs will happen together for two weeks, but kids will self-select after that
  • More information coming in a separate email from Karen and Liz

  1.         Princess Whatsername wrap
  • Approx 75 kids from grades 3 and up who participated
  • Many thank-yous to a massive number of volunteers – people who sewed, built, painted, coordinated, baked, ran errands, helped out last-minute – what a remarkable community!
  • Big thank-yous to teachers Kim Garcia, Maegan Heller and Ms. Brooks, plus teaching staff who covered classes and helped organize kids prior to and during the play
  • Key parents included Barb Valcic, Freddie Debachy, Rocky Tesa, James Becker, Herwig Gayer, Sarah Morden, Brad White, Lianne Freisen, Katya Willinsky, Paul Webster, Andrew O’Driscoll
  • Thanks also to the parents who brought baking for the concession stand and helped to man them during intermission
  • Ticket sales – $2,400; concession brought in $600; expenses still coming in – approx $1,500, so we have a profit to put towards next year
